Equatorial Guinea: Malabo Kings retain topflight league crown

Malabo Kings FC have emerged champions of the 2021-2022 Equatoguinean Women First Division, after outsmarting DVO Evinayong to clinch the title.

The 2021 TotalEnergies CAF Women’s champions league semi finalists, needed just a goal difference to separate them from second placed DVO Evinayong, after five round of matches in the title playoffs competition.

In their title run-in, Ruben Garcia Galego’s side recorded four wins from five league games, and one draw, finishing top of the log with 13 points, same number of points as DVO Evinayong, though Kings had a plus five goals difference on their direct title rivals to win.

Following their declaration as champions, it is the second league title for the club which was created three years ago. The Central African representative at the 2021 CAF Women’s Champions League’s recent dominance in the domestic league, has been attributed to hard work and determination, according to their 24-year-old Nigerian-born goalkeeper Ruth Chinasa Sunday.

“This is my second season with the team, and for me it is an amazing experience and exposure,” Sunday told cafonline.com

“It is hardwork, determination and Commitment. I’m super excited because it wasn’t an easy task this season,” she added.

Founded in 2019 by Juan mãne Ondo, the Kings clinched their first Equatorial Guinea Primera Division Femenina that same year, alongside the President’s cup.

They overpowered Cameroon’s Louves Minproff and DR Congo’s FCF Amani, on their way to the first edition of the TotalEnergies CAF Women’s Champions League, where they were eliminated at the semi final by eventual winners Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies FC.

Malabo Kings FC was beaten to the third spot in the continent by Morocco’s AS FAR Rabat, but they now have another chance to return to the continental scene, this time around with much experience to make a difference.
