Ghana football marks 16 years of May 9th stadium tragedy

Ghana marks it saddest day in football history today as they remember the lost of 126 fans who lost their lives in a stadium disaster.

Today May 9th marks exactly 16 years football fans failed to return home from the Accra Sports Stadium after witnessing a Ghana Premier League match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko.

This happened after fans of Kotoko began throwing objects onto the field in protest against a goal scored by Hearts of Oak late in the game.

The police on duty in an attempt to stop the angry fans fired a tear gas into the supporters in a way to calm them down.

This attempt by the police to stop the fans from throwing objects ended in causing stampede killed several several souls of Hearts and Kotoko including women.

Many clubs including the teams involve on the day have marked the day and prayed for the lost souls.

We are still hurt We have not forgotten We cannot forget Our heroes are gone But your memories remain Never Again
