Liverpool through to Champions League group stage

International News
Liverpool produced a stunning attacking display against play-off opponents Hoffenheim to ensure five English sides will compete in the Champions League group stage for the first time. Leading 2-1 from the first leg, the Reds virtually wrapped up the tie with three goals in the opening 20 minutes. Emre Can's deflected shot put them ahead before Mohamed Salah reacted quickest to slot in a rebound off the post. Can stroked in Roberto Firmino's cross at the back post just 143 seconds later before Hoffenheim substitute Mark Uth, introduced after 24 minutes in a tactical reshuffle, pulled one back. Former Hoffenheim forward Firmino put the tie beyond doubt after the break, sliding the ball into the bottom corner after Jordan Henderson dispossessed opposing captain Kevin Vogt before u...

Kick it Out wants new FA Aluko Inquiry

African Sports
The Football Association should conduct "a comprehensive and independent review" into Eniola Aluko's claims against England boss Mark Sampson, says anti-racism campaign group Kick It Out. The footballer, 30, has accused Sampson of "bullying and discrimination". Sampson, 34, has been cleared of wrongdoing by two investigations and vehemently denies Aluko's claims. But details given by Aluko in a BBC interview on Monday "throw new light on the allegations", Kick It Out said. The Chelsea Ladies player alleges Sampson made a "racist comment" about her family in Nigeria being infected with the Ebola virus. Sampson vehemently denies saying this. The FA said the allegation arose in informal correspondence and was not included in Aluko's subsequent complaint, or it would have been i...

Liverpool have completed the 39m euro (£34m) signing of Roma's former Chelsea winger Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian, 25, has signed a five-year deal and has been a prime target for manager Jurgen Klopp. At current exchange rates, the fee is short of the club record £35m paid for Andy Carroll in 2011 but matches the sum they spent in 2016 to make Sadio Mane the most expensive African player. Salah almost joined Liverpool from Basle in 2014 before moving to Chelsea. Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said: "He has the perfect mix of experience and potential - this is a really exciting signing for us. "I have followed him since he emerged at Basle and he has matured into a really good player. "His pace is incredible, he gives us more attacking threat and we are already strong in this

Essien and Cole completed a transfer move to the Indonesia outfit last month and made their respective debuts last Saturday in a 0-0 draw against Arema FC. But, the players and their club may soon be involved in a legal tussle after the government-backed Professional Sports Agency found the players did not have the required work permits to play in the country. The club admitted Monday that the players did not have the work permits and they had sought to acquire the documents a few days before their first match. Jermain Defoe made a goalscoring return to the international fold as England chalked up a routine 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Lithuania. The 20th strike of Defoe's international career came after 21 minutes at Wembley and four years on from his 19th versus minnows San Marino in March 2013. Aside from the 34-year-old Sunderland striker celebrating a starting berth in familiar style, there was little else to write home about in a forgettable encounter. Manchester City centre-back John Stones was forced into a goal-line clearance on the stroke of half-time but Gareth Southgate's side closed out victory in comfort after Defoe's replacement Jamie Vardy doubled their advantage midway through the second period. Burnley's Michael Keane made his competitive debut alongside Sto
