Real Madrid 2-0 Barcelona (agg 5-1): Marco Asensio nets stunner and Karim Benzema hits target as Zinedine Zidane’s men clinch Spanish Super Cup

International News
Cristiano Ronaldo looked down from his private box, Gareth Bale watched from the bench, and on the pitch – showing no signs of missing either of them – Real Madrid destroyed a Barcelona side to win the Spanish Super Cup. Philippe Coutinho and Ousmane Dembele’s prices can be cranked up a little further after this because Barcelona’s board have no choice but to strengthen before the window shuts. Today they will present former Tottenham midfielder Paulinho, not quite the first post-Neymar signing their supporters had in mind. Real Madrid were without their two most expensive players as Ronaldo began a five-game ban for pushing a referee and Bale was dropped to the bench to make way for 21-year-old Marco Asensio. It was the youngster’s rocket shot from 35-yards out on four mi

Cristiano Ronaldo: Real Madrid forward suspended for five games

International News
Cristiano Ronaldo has been suspended for five games after he was sent off in Real Madrid's 3-1 win against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup first leg on Sunday. He was given a one-match ban for being shown two yellow cards and a further four for pushing the referee in the back after he had been sent off. The bookings at the Nou Camp were for taking off his shirt to celebrate his goal to make it 2-1 and for a dive. He will miss Wednesday's second leg. Ronaldo, 32, will have 10 days to appeal. The Portugal international will be able to play in the Champions League but will not return to domestic action until 20 September against Real Betis. Madrid had already signalled their intent to appeal against Ronaldo's second yellow card shown for diving eight minutes from time whe...

Barcelona 1-3 Real Madrid: Cristiano Ronaldo scores and sent off

International News
Cristiano Ronaldo scored and was then sent off as Real Madrid beat Barcelona 3-1 in the Spanish Super Cup first leg. Gerard Pique slid Marcelo's cross into his own net before Lionel Messi levelled from a penalty. Ronaldo, who was a substitute, restored Real's lead when he ran from halfway before smashing an effort home. He was booked for taking off his shirt to celebrate and shown a second yellow shortly after for a dive - before Marco Asensio scored an excellent third. Ronaldo felt he should have had a penalty when he went down under pressure from Samuel Umtiti, and appeared to shove the referee in the back after he was shown the red card. Even for a player who has been so prominent in El Clasico contests, the 24 minutes Ronaldo spent on the pitch were unusually eventful. ...

Real Madrid beat Man United to win Super Cup

International News
Manchester United were outclassed as Spanish and European champions Real Madrid retained the Uefa Super Cup victory in a sweltering Skopje. Madrid dominated from the start and deservedly led when Casemiro - who looked offside - slid in a half volley. They doubled their lead when Isco calmly slotted in from eight yards after a neat one-two with Gareth Bale, who started ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo. New £75m striker Romelu Lukaku tapped in before Marcus Rashford scuffed wide. The Europa League winners were given encouragement by Lukaku's strike, despite rarely threatening the Madrid goal in the previous hour, and could have scored a barely deserved equaliser through half-time substitute Rashford with nine minutes left. United were unable to create another clear-cut chance as Mad

Real Madrid’s transfer ban reduced to one window

Real Madrid have had their ban on signing players reduced to one transfer window following an appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (Cas). The Spanish side had originally been barred from signing players for two windows by world governing body Fifa. They remain banned from registering new players this January but will now be able to make signings next summer. The club have also had their fine reduced from 360,000 Swiss francs (£282,000) to Sfr 240,000 (£188,000). Cristiano Ronaldo sealed the win - and a place in Sunday's final against Kashima Antlers - by drilling a second in added time amid some confusion.
